How Do Reusable Hand Warmers Work?
Unlike disposable hand warmers, these hand warmers are reusable. They are small plastic bags with clear liquid and a small metal disk inside. Flex the metal disk to release the heat. Oh, presto! The liquid will turn into heat-emitting crystals. The heat will last for about 45 minutes, or longer if you carry it in your pocket. To reset the hand warmer, boil it in water for about 10 minutes until the crystals turn back into liquid. You can boil several at a time.
How does a hand warmer work? The liquid inside the bag is made up of water and sodium acetate. When you bend the small disc, small pieces of metal are released. These cause a chain reaction by shaking the sodium acetate, an incredible chemical. The sodium acetate turns into crystals that release their stored heat energy. It heats up to 54°C! You can reverse the process by boiling the bag until the liquid runs clear again.
